Academy Awards Performance Fundamentals Scholarship

The Academy for Film and Television, Minneapolis, awarded a full scholarship for the Performance Fundamentals Program to Florence Cherry of Minneapolis, on August 31, 2003. According to family lore, Florence never spoke a first "word" but began speaking in paragraphs. By the time she was four and acting in the Rainbow Music Theatre's summer program for children, she was convinced she wanted to be an actor. Posing in front of people and being in performance mode were her most comfortable times.

As a teen Florence worked for Habitat for Humanity and at the Episcopal Church Home and Midway Hospital because public service was a priority for her. Florence graduated in 2001 from Central High School in St. Paul, and then attended Anoka -Hennepin Technical College and Normandale Community College in Bloomington during 2002 and 2003. Florence's advisor at Normandale Community College states "Ms. Cherry has a strong drive for artistic expression. She writes and performs poetry. She performs traditional dances in public venues. Creative expression is as central to her ongoing development as are academic and political endeavors." Recently Florence enrolled in a nursing program at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul. She believes a career in nursing will allow her to support her 15 month old son and to help others while pursuing her dream of becoming a screen or television actor.
